Wahiawa Nursing & Rehab Center

Welcome!

Formed in 1997, the Central Oahu Caregivers’ Support Group exists to provide networking, information, support, and assistance to persons caring for a chronically ill or incapacitated family member. Attendance is open to anyone concerned with these issues, whether or not serving as a caregiver at the present time.

The group meets the second Thursday of each month, 7:00 p.m., in the second floor dining room of the Wahiawa Nursing & Rehab Center, Wahiawa General Hospital, 128 Lehua Street. Instead of entering the building through the hospital main lobby, use the separate doorway to the Nursing & Rehab Center (previously known as the Long Term Care/Skilled Nursing Facility). Take the elevator to the second floor and proceed straight ahead to the first room across the opposite hallway. Call Marilyn Lee (586-9460), Rachel Sato (621-6467), Gary Powell (625-3782), or Lani Nedbalek (625-0420) if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you!

What’s New

Health Care Reform Resource Center

The American Health Care Association / National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL) is devoting a portion of its website to the recent health care reform legislation and the law's impact on long-term and post-acute care. Much of the group's focus is to influence, on behalf of its membership, the detailed regulations which will implement the law as various provisions become effective. You may be interested in reading about the measures which are taking effect this year.

June 2010 Notes

To lead off our June notes, Wes Lum, PhD, MPH, provides a recap of the major eldercare/family caregiver-related bills and resolutions passed by the 2010 Hawaii State Legislature. Next is a summary of Director Gary Powell's May presentation Unlocking the Mysteries of Long-Term Care Insurance, followed by a reprint of a previous article on his nonprofit Caregiver Foundation of America.

Hurricane Season

In Hawaii, hurricane season officially started on June 1. Now would be an excellent time to review the article When the Announcer Says, “This Is Not a Test!” from our August 2009 newsletter and the draft booklet A Natural Disasters Safety and Readiness Guide for Seniors in Hawaii.

Website Changes

As announced, we are no longer printing and distributing a monthly "hard copy" newsletter. Instead, we're mailing postcard reminders in advance of each meeting, and our website has been expanded:

About Us features a group photo of the current Board of Directors along with some background on the who, what, when, where, and why of the COCSG.

Notes will highlight a variety of recent group activities — guest speaker presentations, workshops and seminars, community outreach events, lobbying efforts at the State Capitol, and more. We'll provide these illustrated news items as downloadable/printable PDF files, reference applicable sections under the Meeting Topics tab, and archive the notes chronologically under Notes & Newsletters.

Other Resources contains the caregiver resources listed on the back page of previous newsletters and a link to the online Senior Information & Assistance Handbook.
